Why do you call
this a 'high-collision' intersection?
There is a sign from each direction cautioning drivers
that this is a high-collision intersection, I guess this is so that people
will avoid running a red light (as opposed to a regular intersection where
they can drive recklessly). If you see an accident, please
send me a picture. This intersection has a red-light camera,
so drive carefully. My last car was totalled a few blocks south of
this intersection during bumper-to-bumper rush hour traffic, look at the
mangled
wreckage.
What direction
is the camera facing?
The camera is pointed EAST, Center Point Mall is in the
bottom right corner (south west corner), Esso gas station is in the upper
left corner (north east corner).
What's so special
about Yonge Street?
Yonge Street is the longest road in North America.
It starts in Toronto at Lake Ontario.
Sometimes all
I see is a white or grey screen, what's going on?
The camera is in a tall building and sometimes it is
completely fogged in, even if it isn't very foggy at street level.
Heavy rain or snow can also make it difficult to see much detail.
Sometimes I don't
see a street scene but something completely different, why?
If I want to use the camera for something else or need
to turn it off, I may switch the image to a security camera. Or maybe
I've decided to point it at something I think is more interesting, after
all it's my camera and I'll point it at anything I want!
What is the best
time to see something?
I guess this depends on what you want to see, typical
rush hours are 8am and 5pm through the week and there is always lots of
traffic. Saturday afternoons can be very busy, often there are police
directing traffic into the mall at the corner. But even at 4am there is
some traffic, if you are willing to watch for a few minutes.
I can't
get streaming video to work, what's wrong?
The streaming video uses Javascript,
you may be using an old browser, download the newest browser from Netscape
or Microsoft. You must have Java enabled, in Netscape go to Edit
-> Preferences -> Advanced.
A more common problem lately seems to be with proxy servers, a proxy server is often
used by your ISP to cache popular pages.
To disable your proxy in Internet Explorer:
Select Tools then Internet Options
Select the Connections window
Press the Lan Settings button and in the bottom half of the window will be a
box that says Use a proxy, uncheck this box. You should remember what address
and port is there before you close the window, it may not be there later and you may
want to restore it.
To disable your proxy in Netscape:
Select Edit then Preferences
Expand the Advanced options by pressing the +
Select Proxies and you will see a window, check the option that says
Direct connection to the internet
You should remember what URL is there before you close the window, it may not be there
later and you may want to restore it.
What size shoes
do you wear?
10 or 11, depending on the manufacturer (why do people
keep asking this?).
I want to do
live-streaming video, how do I do it?
Get a camera, buy some software (I use webcam32,
it handles all the streaming stuff), connect to the internet and you're
all set. You can only do live-streaming while you are connected to
the internet, if you use a dial-up connection you may have to change your
web page each time you connect and modify your IP address (the current
version of webcam32 will do this for you). (To see your current IP
address, in WIN95 or 98 you can run the command winipcfg).
What webcam32
settings do you use for streaming video?
Under Settings->TCP/IP:
Maximum Push Interval: 300 Seconds
Maximum Push Size: 30000 KBytes
Frame Delay: 0 MSecs
Make sure Server Push Port is enabled.
What software,
hardware, internet connection do you use?
For software I use webcam32,
it handles all the live streaming video but can also send static images
to an FTP site at regular intervals. For hardware I am running a
pentium with Windows 98 and use an ATI
All-in-Wonder Pro AGP video capture card with an 8mm video camera as
input. My internet connection is Sympatico.
Can I put your
live images on my webpage?
I would rather you didn't put my
live image on your web page, I have invested a considerable amount of time
and money and I don't want other people using my resources to generate
traffic or ad revenue for themselves. Here is an image
you can use for linking.
What is the
answer to life, the universe and everything?
42 :)
Why do all this?
What's the point, what's the future of it?
Point? There is no point! I do it because
it is there, because I can do it. The future? I believe in
the very near future every one will have the power of a television studio
in their home, there will be thousands and thousands of people producing
and broadcasting their own shows. Of course, there will still be
nothing worthwhile to watch.
